Sex Crimes Lawyer Walker County, Texas

The Walker County District Attorney’ Office has six specially trained prosecutors who handle all cases involving sexual abuse of children through its Special Prosecution Unit.

Following recent conviction of a Huntsville school teacher on child sex assault charges, Assistant District Attorney Stephanie Stroud told the local media about the victims: “These girls are scarred for life because of what they to go through at school. They are stuck in a prison every day and he took a normal high school life away from them.”

That sentiment reflects the hardline prosecution policy in these kinds of cases by the Walker County District Attorney’s Office.

Increased Prosecutions Lead to Increase in False Allegations

The DA offices in both counties have ramped up its prosecution of sex offenses, especially those involving children. This is evidenced by the fact that as of September 2017, there were 128 registered sex offenders in Walker County, 92 of who are registered in Huntsville.

The Walker County district court has responded to the increase in child sex offense prosecutions by imposing harsh prison sentences and hefty fines in these cases.

The Texas Department of Public Safety’s Uniform Crime Report for 2016 found that the number of sex offenses in the state increased by 7.7 percent last year. The Department of Family and Protective Services reported that of the 66,075 confirmed cases of child abuse in the state in 2016, nearly 6,000 of them involved sexual offenses and many of these proved to be false.

Walker County records roughly 47 sexual assaults a year, of which 37 are recorded in Huntsville. Not all of those charged with these offenses are guilty.

Lifetime Registration for Sex Offenders

Conviction of any sex offense requires that the offender register with local law enforcement under both federal and state law thereby placing his name/address in a public registry. This can dramatically alter a person’s life, forever. Securing employment and safe housing become exceedingly difficult. Friends, and even family, tend to drift away. Depression becomes a fixture in a registered sex offender’s life.

Living with sex offender registration is indeed difficult.  Failure to fully comply with the sex offender registration requirements can result in a felony prosecution. Depending on the initial conviction that required registration, the punishment may be based on a state jail, third- degree, or second-degree felony.

The Walker County Sheriff’s Department utilizes a national-based OffenderWatch service to manage and monitor the whereabouts, conduct, and compliance status of registered county sex offenders. The department, in conjunction with federal authorities, conducts regular investigative sweeps to make sure all offenders are in compliance with their registration conditions.

The John T. Floyd Law Firm is committed to not letting a child sex abuse allegation lead to a conviction and ultimately to sex offender registration.

If you, or a loved one, is under investigation, or has been charged with a child sex abuse offense, it is imperative that you seek legal representation as soon as possible.
