HOUSTON MAN SENTENCED TO 10 YEAR PRISON TERM IN HOSTAGE TAKING CONSPIRACY
HOUSTON – Carlos David Morfin, 25, of Houston, has been sentenced to a ten year prison term for his role in an illegal alien hostage-taking conspiracy, U.S. Attorney Don DeGabrielle Jr. announced today.
Morfin and others forced Leonardo Ibarra, who was driving a truck believed to be used to smuggle aliens, to pullover, then demanded a $40,000 ransom from Ibarra’s boss for Ibarra’s safe return. Failure to pay the ransom would result in Ibarra being killed. After the driver’s boss stopped accepting telephone calls, the group demanded money from Ibarra’s brother who reported the incident to law enforcement. FBI SWAT units rescued Ibarra at a site agreed upon for the ransom exchange after a high-speed chase of two of the kidnappers.
Morfin was convicted in November 2005 following his guilty plea. United States District Judge Sim Lake imposed the 121 months term of imprisonment to be followed by a 5-year term of supervised release on Thursday, March 8, 2007.
