FOURTH DEFENDANT CHARGED IN FRAUDULENT SBA LOAN SCHEME PLEADS GUILTY BEFORE JURY SELECTION
HOUSTON, TX – Maged M. Abuzaid, 37, pleaded guilty to bank fraud
arising from a scheme to obtain a $1 million United States Small Business
Administration guaranteed loan from a Houston area bank through false
representations to fund the purchase of a convenience store in Silsbee,
Texas. United States Attorney Don DeGabrielle announced the Abuzaid,
who pleaded guilty, May 22, 2006, just before jury selection was scheduled
to being, is the fourth of a total of five defendants charged for their
involvement in this scheme to be convicted. Abuzaid’s co-defendants,
Mohammad Islam, 38, Habib Murshed, 37, and Zulfikar Datoo, 53, all
pleaded guilty to bank fraud or conspiracy to commit bank fraud earlier
this month. A fifth and last defendant, Noman Tabani is believed to

HOUSTON, TX – United States Attorney Donald J. DeGabrielle, Jr. today announced the recent return of four separate indictments charging Rashieda Hollins, 24, Zina Rogers, 42, Byron Smith, 59, and Jason Watson, 21, all of Houston, Texas, with filing false claims with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for Hurricane Katrina or Hurricane Rita disaster relief. LAREDO, TX – Humberto Garcia, also known as “Beto,” 38, of Laredo, was convicted by a jury’s verdict returned today following a four day trial for his involvement in a marijuana trafficking conspiracy involved with thousands of kilograms of marijuana, announced United States Attorney Don DeGabrielle. FEDERAL PRETRIAL SERVICES OFFICER INDICTED
FOR MAKING FALSE STATEMENTS TO FEDERAL OFFICERS
HOUSTON, TX – Long-time McAllen Federal Pretrial Services Officer Juan M. Cantu, 51, of Edinburg, Texas, was indicted late Monday, May 15, 2006, by a Houston federal grand jury for making false statements to federal officers, United States Attorney Don DeGabrielle announced today. Cantu was previously arrested by FBI and IRS agents during the early morning of April 18, 2006, and released on bond. He was subsequently ordered to wear a tracking device with other stringent bond conditions. more... »

DRUG TRAFFICKER SENTENCED
HOUSTON, TX – Juan Ramon Esparza, 44, of North Charles, South Carolina, who was charged in a federal indictment in May 2005 with drug trafficking, was sentenced today by United States District Judge Sim Lake. United States Attorney Don DeGabrielle announced that Esparza was sentenced to serve 262 months in federal prison, without parole, a 5 year term of supervised release, and $300 special assessment. more... »
