In a nation that prides itself on the "rule of law," it is heartbreaking to realize that prosecutors -- who have a sacred duty to represent the people in the righting of wrongs -- can feel themselves free to act with impunity, indeed absolute disregard for any respect of the law, in determining who goes to jail or to the gas chamber. In effect, prosecutors would have the power of judge and jury in their hands, regardless of their original and appropriate role in the free judicial process. I can't wait until a Subway Tuna is framed in place of the proverbial Ham Sandwich.
